Question

Why do the girls outnumber the boys?

Answer

First see the answer to Bonus Question 1.

From their founding through the end of the 1960s, Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant admitted only boys. Bronx Science was more enlightened, but then it was very far by subway from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Through the efforts of Alice de Rivera and some civil liberties lawyers, the single sex barrier was broken at Stuyvesant in Fall of 1969 when thirteen girls were admitted, most in the 10th grade, one or two in the 9th. Brooklyn Tech succumbed three years later.

All the students who left 8SPE-1 and 8SPE-2 for Brooklyn Tech were boys, which left the imbalance in the combined 9SPE.
